Mini-symphosium “Construction History, an emerging discipline. A Russian-Spanish encounter“
The studies on Construction History began in the second half of the 19th Century. In the 20th Century the new materials (steel and reinforced concrete) and the eventual advent of Modern Architecture (the Bauhaus, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier) provoked the collapse of traditional masonry and wood construction; with it, Construction History as such practically disappeared. At the last two decades of the 20th Century there was a rebirth of the interest on historical studies on construction and at the beginning of the 21st Century Construction History is reviving with great force, for its intrinsic interest as an Academic Discipline, which bridges Architecture and Technique, and for the importance of the knowledge it provides for the maintenance and restoration of our historic built patrimony. The increasing number of National Societies, the International and National Congresses, new Journals, new Chairs in some Universities, testify this rebirth.
So far, the emphasis has been on the West European building culture (though some Spanish-American and Portuguese-Brazilian Congresses have been held). The purpose of this Mini-symposium is to establish contact with East Europe, particularly with the extraordinary Russian culture. The History of Construction would be incomplete without its incorporating.
The sessions are organized around some key topics, and in each, a Russian and a Spanish academic would present the state of the art in their respective countries. We hope that in this way we may have an idea of the actual state of the studies in both countries.
But the main objective is to establish new contacts, to define a new relationship for future collaboration and sharing in this fascinating emerging discipline which is Construction History.
1) Construction History in Russia and Spain;
2) Historic Treatises on Construction and the dissemination of building knowledge;
3) Building with stone and wood: vaults and trusses;
4) Bridges and public works;
5) Defensive architecture: Walls and Fortresses.
* Each session will consist of two interventions (Russian and Spanish) of 20 minutes. At the end there will be 20 minutes for questions and discussion.
We are pleased to invite you to the International scientific and practical conference “Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Heritage” (RRAH 2021) on March 24-27, 2021 at SPbGASU.
