Online Mini-symposium “Construction History, an emerging discipline. A Russian-Spanish encounter“

The studies on Construction History began in the second half of the 19th Century. In the 20th Century the new materials (steel and reinforced concrete) and the eventual advent of Modern Architecture (the Bauhaus, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier) provoked the collapse of traditional masonry and wood construction; with it, Construction History as such practically disappeared. At the last two decades of the 20th Century there was a rebirth of the interest on historical studies on construction and at the beginning of the 21st Century Construction History is reviving with great force, for its intrinsic interest as an Academic Discipline, which bridges Architecture and Technique, and for the importance of the knowledge it provides for the maintenance and restoration of our historic built patrimony. The increasing number of National Societies, the International and National Congresses, new Journals, new Chairs in some Universities, testify this rebirth

So far, the emphasis has been on the West European building culture (though some Spanish-American and Portuguese-Brazilian Congresses have been held). The purpose of this Mini-symposium is to establish contact with East Europe, particularly with the extraordinary Russian culture. The History of Construction would be incomplete without its incorporating
